Meet Tony & James

Tony usually hits the gym four times a week. During summer he pumps up the volume to even five or six times a week, just to make sure his body will turn a few more heads at the beach. Tony loves to work on his pecs, abs and biceps, but is less thrilled when it comes to squats and lunges. Never forgets about the lower body though, as he knows how important it is to train every part of your body.

Besides taking good care of himself, Tony also makes sure his show dog James is in exellent shape. James' fitness routine includes daily runs, sprint work three times a week and plenty of playtime. As a former US champion, James is now doing extremely well in dutch shows. He loves entering the ring, getting all the attention and -just as Tony- making heads turn with his perfectly shaped butt.

Eco Puma

OrthoLite, the leader of open cell foam insoles, has partnered with Puma to incorporate its proprietary EcoOrthoLite insole technology into their range of performance and lifestyle footwear lines. By the beginning of 2011, a third of Puma's footwear will include the unparalleled benefits of OrthoLite performance, including breathability, moisture control, anti-microbial properties, and long term cushioning.

Puma will be the first major brand to embrace OrthoLite's new line of eco-friendly insoles. EcoOrthoLite uses an environmentally friendly, non-food source bio-oil as a substitute for traditional fossil fuel based raw material. The bio-oil replaces 20% of the petroleum traditionally used in the polyol component of urethane foams, making the formula part of a clean, renewable resource.

Earlier this year, Puma introduced the 'clever little bag'- a cutting-edge sustainable packaging and distribution system by renowned industrial designer Yves Béhar. The new innovative solution will significantly reduce the amount of waste and CO2 emissions that traditional product packaging such as shoe-boxes and apparel polyethylene bags generate and underpins Puma’s target of reducing carbon, energy, water, and waste by 25%, and developing 50% of its international product collections in footwear, apparel and accessories according to best practice sustainability standards by 2015.

Light up with Stella McCartney

May I just say, wow. And again. WOW! The Adidas by Stella McCartney collection enters the fall/winter 2010 season continuing to re-define and challenge traditional sport silhouettes by introducing an innovative new glow-in-the-dark story within the running category. The functional fashion collection remains the only line available for women that is a true fusion of performance and style, combining cutting-edge Adidas technologies with Stella’s unique designs.

Stella McCartney on the glow-in-the-dark running collection: “Running is one of our most popular categories and for me to make it have its own point of view is really key. I think that we did it this season in a direct way by looking at glow-in-the-dark. When you are running in an urban environment, you need to feel safe, when people can see you coming and stand out, especially in winter when it gets dark earlier. But at the same time we used it on a leopard print, so it’s not so masculine and graphic. We also have glow-in-the-dark key rings which have a nice sense of humour, which you can have if you are a man, a woman, or a kid.”

Meet Menco

See the guy in the middle? That's my collegue Menco. Every saterday we teach a class in the park called 'So You Wanna Be An Athlete..." It's an intense full body workout that covers agility, speed, power and strength. As a former American Football player, Menco is no stranger to train the body to its full potential.

Here's Menco's simple, but highly effective beach workout. The only fitness tool you need is an empty backpack!

"Go to the beach with an empty backpack, fill it with sand and carry it on your back while running in bare feet in hard sand, loose sand and the water. Especially the bare feet running in loose sand will give a boost to your joint stability. Mix it up with some swimming and finish with a few sprinting exercises in the sand dunes."

Meet Harriët

So this is how a woman can look like from lifting seriously heavy weights. Not too scary, huh? Most women believe they'll bulk from lifting anything heavier than 1 pound. Well Harriët pumps iron like one of the guys for six days a week and with the toned body of a twenty five year old fitness model, no one would guess she's 42 (sorry for that, Har). She works on every muscle group once a week in a cycle of 6 weeks. Starting the cycle with high reps and lots of different exercises, finishing it with only 2 reps with maximum weights and 3 exercises per muscle group. As for her cardio, Harriët does 4 Spinning classes a week. A body like this requires not only a solid workout plan though. You also have to be strict on your diet. Harriët eats plenty of proteins, lots of veggies, healthy fatty foods and she never (as in NEVER) touches sugar.

Gay Gym Culture

Finally took the time to read 'Muscle Boys, Gay Gym Culture'. Although I work out at the main gay gym in Amsterdam for more than a decade, it turned out I still had a lot to learn about the secret world of muscle boys, poz jocks, circuit boys, athletes, muscle bears and muscle daddies, the use of steroids, human growth hormone and what goes on in the locker room. The book covers the history, sociology and influence of bodybuilding and offers an in-depth look at gay body culture.

Stella's Gym

Courtney Cox, Shakira, Gisele Bündchen and of course Gwyneth Paltrow. They all do the quite unconventional Tracy Anderson Method. The method involves exercises that look like nothing you'll ever see in a normal gym and promotes lots of reps with no weights or just tiny ones. According to Tracy, that's how you target the small muscles, which she calls "accessory muscles." Activate those with her "strategic sequencing" and she promises everybody the physique of a teeny tiny dancer.

In 2008, when Tracy Anderson just started making a name for herself in the international fitness industry by being the personal trainer of Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney and Madonna, Adidas invited me to attend the Adidas by Stella McCartney show at the London Fashion Week and to interview Tracy Anderson as their new Adidas by Stella McCartney personal trainer.

The show turned out not to be a regular runway show, but an energetic, sport performance presentation at ‘Stella’s Gym’. Trampolines, treadmills, jump ropes, tennis and a workout with Tracy's body band system.

Meet Rinke

So this is typically Rinke when meeting her at the gym for a workout: wearing boots she just had to buy at Barneys on Rodeo Drive and a Balmain bag dangling from her arm in which she carries her Adidas by Stella McCartney sports outfit. As an editor for Grazia, Rinke travels the world and attends the hottest international runway fashion shows. And she runs. A lot. Like a 30K run on a sunday afternoon just for the fun of it. Rinke recently ran her first marathon, finished in a time of 3:38. Her only comment: 'I was just too slow...'
